Did you know that 3 in 5 Indigenous kids in remote areas never finish school?
This isn't the only disturbing reality of education in rural Western Australia. By year 3, kids in remote areas are 12 times more likely to be behind in national minimum standards than their metro counterparts. Growing up in the country can be a wonderful experience, but sometimes it can also be hard - so hard that you feel you're getting left behind.
Education is the foundation of a child's academic, psychological and social development, and unfortunately not all kids are afforded the same fair go right from the very beginning.
Teach Learn Grow is working to change that.
Our vision is for every child in Western Australia to have equal opportunities in education regardless of location, background or circumstance. We strive for this vision through our two programs: the Rural Program, and eMentor.
The Rural Program sends volunteers to rural and remote primary schools in WA to provide one-on-one tuition and mentoring to students, with the aim of improving their mathematics levels, giving them the confidence to learn and ultimately helping them to realise their potential. Supplementing the Rural Program is our eMentor, providing online interactive mentoring to upper-primary students in rural WA in preparation for their transition to high school.
Both of our programs provide fantastic opportunities for enthusiastic, passionate university students to inspire real change in our community, develop personally and professionally and learn about the reality of education in our own state. 96% of TLG volunteers in 2015 felt more aware of the socioeconomic factors that affect education, while a massive 97% believe that they made a difference to the lives of rural and Indigenous students.
